Irish Independent:

A GREAT RECEPTION

Capt. Brennan is justifiably proud of the wonderful reception given our team at each centre, and in particular pays tribute to Olaf Pettersen, vice-president of the Norwegian Association who was here with the Norwegian team last July. Mr. Pettersen, wearing his years well, was continually in attendance on the Irish team.

Everywhere the Irish team had a great welcome, and on the 360 miles journey from Oslo to Bergen, Mr. Pettersen entertained the company with many Irish songs.

His noted wit was not lost on the company, and the point was fully appreciated when he stated that "the first 'English' song he learned was an Irish one" ("When Irish Eyes are Smiling")

Capt. Brennan noted many points of difference in matters of organisation. In Norway the usual custom was to have the weigh-in at 3 o'clock in the day. The Irish representative pointed out that the Norwegian rule would be unfair to boxers after a long journey, and that moreover the International law on the point referred to the "day of the contest" and not any special hour.

The Norwegians thereupon graciously waived their rule that the weigh-in take place 5 hours before the contest.

The weigh-in is a big ceremony in Norway, and the public always attend in large numbers.

There are no preliminary words of warning such as "Seconds out," in the bouts, and the "Silent count" is used, the boxer being left (if possible to gauge his own time to beat the count. The gong again signalises the end.

The referee goes into the ring. At each centre this official showed great capacity.

Back Blows Foul.

When a "break" is ordered, the boxers must stand apart; that is, they must go back a distance before again launching an attack.

Again, hitting on the back of the body or head is considered a foul, and when this occurred occasionally and by accident (as our boys had been warned), the crowd gave vent to a pronounced "Hesh!" ("Foul!").
